Paint Meets Pixel
As a trained oil painter who has consistently been drawn into technology over the past 35 years, Iozzo’s current body of work seamlessly blends traditional art media with the digital realm. Her journey into virtual reality began in 1994 while at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she experienced Brown University’s pioneering research in collaboration with NASA. By 2018, technological advancements enabled her to introduce VR to her students. Today, through the integration of virtual reality painting using Google Tilt Brush/Open Brush and QR codes, Iozzo creates immersive digital experiences that transport viewers into entirely new worlds.
Digital Bloom: An Immersive Eden is a collection of nine digital artworks, each created in virtual reality using Tilt Brush/Open Brush and Adobe Photoshop on 12 x 12-inch wood panels. This series invites viewers into a vibrant, dynamic virtual world. The project began in October 2018, inspired by the serene beauty of a botanical garden arbor. By 2025, the expansive virtual landscape has evolved into a massive file size of 1,808,104 KB (1.8GB).
Designed to be more than just visual art, Digital Bloom encourages an interactive experience. Each piece comes to life through smartphones and QR codes that seamlessly merge with "snapshots" of the virtual 3D artwork, transporting viewers into an ever-changing "Eden" filled with movement, color, light, and organic form. These QR codes are not generated automatically but are painstakingly digitally hand-painted by the artist. This process is time-consuming and intense, requiring continuous trial and error to ensure that each QR code functions consistently and reliably across all interactions.
Short 15-30 second videos, derived from these snapshots, offer glimpses into a larger, continuously evolving universe. These videos act as portals into this vivid world, transforming the act of viewing from passive observation to active engagement. The series invites curiosity, fostering an immersive journey where each piece is an evolving fragment of a broader, living digital ecosystem.
